['티핑 포인트'라는] 그 말은 미국 북동부의 오래된 도시에 살던 백인들이 교외로 이주하는 현상을 기술하기 위해 1970년대에 자주 사용한 표현이다. 사회학자들은 특정 지역으로 유입해 오는 아프리카계 미국인의 숫자가 어떤 지점, 즉 20%에 이르게 되면 그 지역 공동체가 "뒤집히는 것"을 관찰했다. 남아 있던 백인들이 대부분, 거의 한순간에 떠나버린 것이다. 티핑 포인트는 임계지점, 발단, 끓는점에 이르는 순간이다.
